What types of coats are there – and how do I know which one my dog has? Your dog’s coat type plays a big role in choosing the right care. Here’s an overview:

• Short coat: Very short (1–2 cm), smooth hair that lies close to the body – with or without undercoat. Typical breeds: Boxer, French Bulldog, Doberman.
• Long coat: Long topcoat (up to 20 cm), often with dense undercoat and soft, flowing hair. Typical breeds: Poodle, Golden Retriever, Yorkshire Terrier.
• Wire coat: Dense, coarse topcoat with some undercoat. Robust and water-repellent. Typical breeds: Wirehaired Dachshund, Schnauzer, Airedale Terrier.
• Double coat: Medium-length topcoat (3–10 cm) with dense undercoat – the classic “double coat.” Typical breeds: German Shepherd, Husky, Labrador Retriever.
